Statewide Health Improvement Program (SHIP)
The Statewide Health Improvement Program (SHIP), an integral part of Minnesota's nation-leading 2008 health reform law, strives to help Minnesotans lead longer, healthier lives by preventing the chronic disease risk factors of tobacco use and exposure, poor nutrition and physical inactivity. SHIP seeks to create sustainable, systemic changes in schools, work sites, communities and health care organizations that make it easier for Minnesotans to incorporate healthy behaviors into their daily lives.
Meeker County Tobacco Ordinance (PDF) regulates the sale, possession and use of tobacco products and tobacco related devices.
The Meeker McLeod Sibley Healthy Communities Leadership Team (MMS HCLT) is a coalition of community members that has been in existence over 15 years. The Community Leadership Team is also the core strategy team for SHIP in Meeker, McLeod and Sibley Counties. The CLT represents a unique diversity of 4 sectors, organizational, geographical, ethnicity, gender, age and expertise.
Four subcommittees exist under the Healthy Communities Leadership Team: Mental Health, Obesity Prevention, Emergency Preparedness, and Prevention/Wellness Subcommittees. Currently Healthy Communities holds funding for the Statewide Health Improvement Program through the Minnesota Department of Health which will assist in our Obesity Prevention Subcommittee work.
