Meeker County "Shotgun Zone" No More

Home Posted on February 18, 2026

The Meeker County Board held a public hearing the evening of February 17th to discuss changes to the types of firearms allowed during deer hunting season.  About 70 people attended, with 24 providing input during the meeting and 18 submitting written comments beforehand.

The majority of feedback supported allowing hunters to use rifles for deer hunting in Meeker County. After hearing public input, Commissioners shared their viewpoints and voted to adopt a motion supporting the use of rifles for deer hunting.

In 2025, the Minnesota Legislature repealed the "shotgun zone" for deer hunting, allowing rifles statewide beginning with the 2026 season, while giving counties the option to maintain previous restrictions.

We appreciate everyone who attended, spoke, or submitted comments in advance - your input matters!
