Meeker County Property Records, Taxation & Elections

This office covers duties with Statute reference to the County Auditor.  The position is appointed by the County Board of Commissioners and is the liaison between the townships, city councils, school districts and watershed districts with ties to county government.  The Auditor is the County’s Chief Election Official.  The official publication of public notices for the county has been designated to the Enterprise/Dispatch.  The newspaper is published weekly on Friday’s.

Essential Functions Include:

Elections:

The Auditor serves as the chief election officer for the county.  In this capacity, the department is responsible for training election judges and officials, programming and obtaining ballots, registering voters, absentee ballot administration, mail voting administration, filing for certain candidates, providing election equipment and supplies for 30 voting precincts within the county.  The department maintains voter information for the county on the Statewide Voter Registration System.  See Election tab for more information.

Ditches

The Property Records, Taxation and Election Department of Meeker County is the keeper of the financial records for each county and joint drainage system within the county.  Responsibilities include filing ditch assessments for maintenance costs, coordinating with the drainage inspector and maintaining the historical records of ditch proceedings.

Licensing

The office provides license service for retail sales of liquor, strong beer, and tobacco.  Other licenses include an auctioneer, public fireworks display, and transient merchants.   

Parcel Ownership and Property Tax Information

The Office calculates the tax capacity rates on which all taxes are levied and computes taxes on each of the approximately 18,000 parcels of land for real property, personal property, and mobile home taxes.  These taxes are based on the budgets of the county, townships, cities, school districts, and special taxing districts.  Special assessments for county, townships, and cities, as certified, are calculated and assigned to the proper parcel for collection via the tax statement and remitted to the taxing districts.  Settlement and distribution of the collected taxes is coordinated with the Treasurer’s Department of the County.  Annual Tax Statements are mailed in March.  Truth in Taxation, estimated tax notices are mailed in November.   

The office maintains up-to-date records of the ownership, taxpayer addresses, and property legal descriptions on each parcel of land in the county.  Daily changes are made involving property transfers, sales, parcel splits, mortgages, etc.  The county provides the public with a web site to view parcel information including updated payment information and ability to view and print current and past tax statements.  

Minnesota Statutes require applying late penalties, fees, and interest for delinquent tax records.   Notices are published and mailed as required.  Taxes left unpaid for three or more years are subject to forfeiture.
