Local Option Sales Tax (LOST)

Meeker County is exploring the implementation of a 0.5% Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) for transportation.

The majority of Meeker County's roadway funding is provided through the State of Minnesota and is derived primarily from fuel taxes, motor vehicle sales taxes, and auto parts sales taxes. Historically, these revenue sources have not kept pace with the rising costs of roadway maintenance and construction. As construction and material costs continue to increase more rapidly than existing funding, it has become increasingly challenging to maintain and improve the county's roadway system.

If implemented, the LOST would apply to most goods and purchases made within the county that are currently subject to sales tax. Revenue generated by the tax would be used exclusively for trans-portation purposes, including maintenance, reconstruction, and safety improvements on Meeker County roads, bridges, and transportation facilities.

A public hearing will be held during the February 3, 2026, County Board meeting. At the hearing, county staff will present additional information about the proposed tax, and members of the public will have an opportunity to provide feedback to the County Board. No final decision has been made, and public input will be considered before the County Board takes further action.
